Google and Indian Apps agree to find solutions in next 120 days


Google: There is a dispute going on for the last several weeks between the apps of tech giant Google and some selected companies of India. Now the Government of India has worked to resolve the ongoing dispute between these two. In fact, the IT Ministry of India has found a middle path for the time being by becoming a peacemaker between Indian app companies and Google. Google and Indian internet companies have agreed to extend the payment timeline of service fees by four months.

Decision will have to be taken in 120 days

According to a report in the Economic Times, this agreement reached with the intervention of the Indian IT Ministry marks an end to the ongoing dispute between Google and India’s popular app companies. Earlier on Tuesday, Google had re-listed ten app developers including Info Edge, Matrimony.com, People Interactive, Truly Madly, KuCoo FM and Alt on Google Play Store. If we understand this agreement in simple language, then Google and companies will have to find a solution to this problem in the next 120 days. Let us explain in a sequential manner how long this dispute has been going on between Google and Indian internet firms, and what has happened between them.

When did the controversy start?

19 January 2024: Madras High Court had rejected the petition of Indian apps companies, in which they had filed a complaint against Google’s in-app billing norms.

4 February 2024: Indian apps companies had filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the decision of Madras High Court.

9 February 2024: The Supreme Court heard and rejected the petition of Indian apps in which they had requested to save themselves on Google Play Store.

1 March 2024: Google delisted the apps of 10 companies from the Play Store that violated the billing policy of the Play Store.

2 March 2024: The Indian government intervened between Google and Indian companies and said that Google cannot remove such Indian apps from the Play Store. The government called a meeting with Google and internet companies on Monday i.e. March 4, 2024. After that Google again listed some apps on the Play Store.

4 March 2024: A meeting was held with Google India and Indian app companies with Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnav and Rajiv Chandrashekhar.

5 March 2024: Google agreed to restore the apps until a concrete decision by the Supreme Court.

6 March 2024: An agreement was reached between Google and Indian internet companies to find a solution to this problem for the next 120 days.
